Our event is unique because it is run by high school students.  Our committee consists of about twenty high school students ranging in the ages from 15-17.  They plan the entire event over a six month period of time.  Thanks to Oheka Castle owner, Gary Melius, the students have a place to entertain their guests.  Last year we had over 475 people attend the gala.  The 2006 gala featured exceptional food from 40 local restaurants, a silent auction featuring over 85 items from across the country, and a raffle which included more than 200 items.  In addition, our grand raffle prize was a      2006 Ford Mustang.  Our event was made possible through the support of 500 corporate and individual sponsors, as well as countless students, faculty and friends of Northport High School.

This past year the students wanted to do more than just raise money for ALS, they wanted to participate in finding a cure.  Before the gala began, the student committee with Jeannette Deutsch-Ogelsby, organized a science symposium that featured nationally recognized scientists.       The symposium was entitled: "Can nanoscience and technology accelerate our search for a cure for ALS?".  The featured speaker at the science symposium was Dr. Ratnesh Lal, a research scientist from the University of California, Santa Barbara.  Other scientists in attendance travelled from Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University, Stony Brook University, Cold Spring Harbor Labs, ALSA, ALS Therapy Development Foundation and the MDA.  The science conference helped open the lines of communication between research scientists in the fields of nanotechnology and neuroscience.  As a result, new collaborations were formed and different avenues for ALS research are currently being explored.

This meeting created opportunities for Northport High School students to become active participants of ALS Research in both the clinical and laboratory setting.  One student will be spending six weeks this summer at The Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins University working in Dr. Jeffrey Rothstein's laboratory.  Another student will be heading out west for six weeks to perform research under the mentorship of Dr. Ratnesh Lal at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  We also anticipate sending other Northport students to conduct research with Dr. Hiroshi Mitsumoto at Columbia University and with Dr. John McCarty at the ALS TDF in Cambridge, MA this summer.  In doing so, our quest for a cure has entered a new stage and our mission has now become two fold: Raising awareness and funds for ALS and directly assisting ALS research scientists.
