amnd chapters

In June 2010, AMND officially opened its first national chapter.  The George Ray DeHart Chapter was created by Amber DeHart in North Carolina.  Since then, chapters have opened up at Villanova University, Syracuse University, Scranton University, University of Delaware, NYU and Marist College.  We have several other chapters starting in the Fall of 2011.  The AMND Chapter program gives all AMND alumni an opportunity to continue to fundraise for ALS at their respective colleges.  Additionally, students at any high school or college across the country have the ability to open up AMND chapters and join the fight against ALS.

recent chapter news

Villanova Chapter

Over the past 2 years, the Villanova AMND Chapter has raised a total of $6,000 for AMND and has held three fundraising and awareness events on campus. In October 2010, Villanova ALS Association (VALSA) hosted a 3 v. 3 basketball tournament on campus called “Hoops 4 ALS.” About 150 Villanova students played in the tournament and participated in the fun-filled day which raised about $3,400 for AMND. This past October, VALSA organized a “Hope Week” in order to raise awareness for ALS. A different type of fundraiser was held each day, including “Cupcakes for a Cure” and “One Dollar, One Day, One Dream.”  Much of the student body participated throughout the week. Finally, VALSA hosted a Jewelry Party to raise money for AMND this past February. As Villanova’s chapter president graduates this year, an undergraduate will take over the position and hopefully VALSA will be here to stay!

George Ray DeHart North Carolina Chapter

George Ray DeHart North Carolina Chapter: After reading about AMND in People Magazine, 21 year old Amber DeHart decided to join the AMND crusade. After losing her grandfather to ALS, Amber and her family wanted to help in any way possible. Over the past year, Amber and her family have raised over $2,500. Their first fundraising event was held at the family Furniture Store, where they held a Silent Auction and raised over $1,000. Amber has continued to raise money over the past year with a “4 for a Cure” campaign where supporters are asked to donate a multiple of 4 dollars in remembrance of Lou Gehrig who wore the number 4 on the New York Yankees. A Carnival fundraiser is in the works for next year!

University of Delaware Chapter

The “Fight for 4″ Club at the University of Delaware has been hard at work this past year. They raised over $700 for AMND this year with a few very creative fundraisers. The Fight for 4 Club has the most Northport alumni of any other AMND Chapter and they are only just getting started. Look forward to more great updates and new fundraisers from this chapter next year!

Scranton Chapter

The Scranton AMND Chapter held our most recent fundraising event, “Move for Those Who Can’t.” This catchy event was a Zumba-thon where students were asked to put on their exercise clothes and dance for a cure! Overall, the event was a huge success in raising ALS awareness at the University and also raised some dough for AMND in the process!

This fall we are going to utilize AMND’s collegiate chapters by conducting an online fundraising competition to raise money for ALS. The competition will allow participants to raise money by creating personalized fundraising web pages and soliciting donations by emailing them out to friends and family and posting them on social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The contest will run from October 15-November 15 2011. There will be prizes for the chapters that raise the most money – including spring break vacation packages!
